Librario, 2004. 1904440428 2004 1904440428 / 9781904440420 Soft cover New Book
Paperback in Mint condition, with pp 308, with b&w and some colour photographs, maps, dedication, acknowledgements, introduction, epilogue, appendices. S3.Francouis Fouin left his native Breton Village and came to England to marry a Northumbrian girl. Having taken a position as valet to Lord Glentanar, the family settled on the Glen Tanar Estate near Aboyne in the 1920's. They little suspected how their lives would become inextricably associalted with the Glentanar family and the local population for the rest of the century. Their son, Pierre Fouin's autobiography traces their life story during the middle years of the last century. The large estates were still managed in the Victorian style and his description of the many characters who worked the land captures an evocative picture of a life which has now disappeared. His profession brought him into contact with many interesting people, notably Marion Crawford 'Crawfie' who was for many years Queen Elizabeth's governess.

Deeside Books, 2012. 9781907813047 2012 1907813047 / 9781907813047 2nd Edition Soft cover New Book
New paperback, republished from the original edition of 1911. Pp xviii,164, with the original b&w photographs and illustrations. It has a new introduction by Bryn Wayte, of Deeside Books. G.M. Fraser's Aberdeen Street Names is the latest in a series of rare and out of print titles to be republished by Deeside Books of Ballater. The original first edition was printed in 1911 by William Smith & Sons of the Bon-Accord Press, Aberdeen, and was one several published by this author on the local area. George Milne Fraser (1862-1938) was born in the Parish of Methlick, Aberdeenshire and started his working life as a stone-cutter in one of the many local granite yards. An accident curtailed this form of employment, and in 1877 he joined the staff of the Aberdeen Free Press and gained a reputation for specialising in articles on local history. This in-depth knowledge of the local area was probably one of the main reasons why he was appointed City Librarian for Aberdeen in 1899, despite not having had a particularly academic background. This position he held for almost the next forty years, and was credited with numerous innovative developments in his field, particularly in the acquisition of many of the publications added to the Library's Local Collection. Many of this author's works are relatively scarce, and this one particularly so, hence the reason for including this book in the North-east Scotland Classics series. Many books have been published on the history of Aberdeen, but this is the only one to have concentrated on the origin of the names of many of the streets that still survive in the city today. Mention is made of the destruction of many of the older parts of Aberdeen, particularly in the 19th century, both for slum clearance and for street widening, but it is still remarkable how many of the older streets are still in existence. It is interesting to follow how the author reached his conclusions on the origins of some of the street names, and he was ideally suited to explore the research opportunities offered by his position as Librarian. This book has been reproduced in its original form, complete with all of the original illustrations. However, a new introduction has been added, which it is hoped will help the reader if more information is required, particularly where illustrative maps are concerned. The book is a large paperback and is now the fourth title in a North-east Scotland Classics series published by Deeside Books. S2.

River, Railway and Ravine: Foot Suspension Bridges for Empire, Harper, Douglas
14 Harper, Douglas River, Railway and Ravine: Foot Suspension Bridges for Empire
The History Press 2015 0750962135 / 9780750962131 1st Edition Hardcover New New Book Signed by Author(s)
Hardcover, New. First edition, SIGNED BY AUTHOR, colour illustrations, appendices, index. From their mid-nineteenth-century fencing business the Harpers of Aberdeen developed a unique system of suspension that allowed their light foot suspension bridges to be relatively rigid. John Harper was one of the first to employ steel wire rope, now universally used. The Harpers' innovative work overcame the disadvantages of this type of bridge and was of considerable benefit to those who relied upon them. Harpers built over sixty such bridges throughout the UK and the British Empire between 1870 and 1910, but until now they have been little documented. The author, John Harper's great-grandson, searched the globe to find and cross those still in use. Here he tells the story of his ancestors, his journeys and the communities the bridges served. S32. Many of these types of bridges still survive today in the North of Scotland, such as those on the River Dee at Cambus o' May, Pollhollick in Ballater, Abergeldie and the Garbh Alt Shiel. There are other examples on the Glen Tanar and Birkhall Estates and also on the River Spey and River Don. THE PACKED WEIGHT OF THIS BOOK IS OVER 1KG, SO FOR UK FIRST CLASS AND INTERNATIONAL, ADDITIONAL POSTAGE COSTS WILL BE REQUIRED.
