Hardback, new, with dust wrapper. Signed by the author. With references and bibliography, maps, b&w and colour illustrations. Description by the author: The ways through the hills and glens are many as are the old ways of life. The title of this book can be taken to mean both but mainly ways of life. There would not have been roads and paths through the hills and glens if there were not reasons behind people’s movements. The more subtle connections are among folk, their families and their occupations. Although this is a Deeside book, it connects through the people and their folklore from our glens and mountains and also far beyond this area to other parts of the world. Upper Deeside has many unique attributes and highly-varied landscape, the ways of life here, especially in the outlying areas, were similar to how things were done throughout other Highland glens of Scotland. When I began writing I came to know the folk and the landscape well and I could see that their knowledge was in imminent danger of disappearing. My concern in wanting to preserve some of the folklore has resulted in four books but also led me into place-name study with Adam Watson, adding a fifth book to the collection. I have tried not to repeat myself as more knowledge has been gained: this can be difficult because some information is covered in earlier books then more becomes available at a later time. Because of this, although this book stands alone, the reader may find it useful to refer to my earlier books. Ian Murray Dr. Seaumas Grant, who is the living authority on Gaelic Dialects, wrote an introduction to the book. Here is a short excerpt: Ian, through his series of books, has done so much to document the way of life, the culture and history of the people of the Braes of Mar. Indeed, thanks to him, their culture and way of life probably the best documented of any community in the Cairngorms. If he had not undertaken the task of interviewing the old people of Mar in such a timely fashion and skilled manner, much of the history and the culture of the Cairngorms would now be lost and we would know so much less about the ways of life of our ancestors, about old Deeside ways and old Highland ways. The packed weight of this book is over 1KG, so for UK first class or overseas we may ask for additional postage.
