Paperback in Fine condition, with b&w photographs and illustrations and some colour photos. Going to the Pictures recalls the days when a night out could only mean a trip to the local Regal or fleapit. The century's most popular art form is remembered in the words of cinema-goers from all over the country, recalling village halls in the Highlands and Islands, as well as the art deco palaces of the cities. Scots share memories of the Silent days, courting in the balcony, noisy children's matinees, and the sheer glamour of Hollywood and the stars. Scottish images on the big screen also feature in a survey of a hundred years of Scotland on film. S3.

Illustrated English Social History: Volume Four: The Nineteenth Century., Trevelyan, G.M.
11 Trevelyan, G.M. Illustrated English Social History: Volume Four: The Nineteenth Century.
Longmans, Green and Co.,1952. 1952 Hardcover Very Good No Jacket Book
Hardback with red cloth covers, no dustwrapper, gilt lettering on front cover and spine. In very good condition. Reprinted edition. Ppxi, 186 With colour plate illustration of fox hunting and b&w photographs and illustrations throughout. With prefatory notes to the illustrations,iIntroduction, descriptive notes to the illustrations and index. This is the book in which Trevelyan famously said that social history was 'history with the politics left out'. He was much criticised for this, particularly by Marxists, who took the view that the political and the social were inextricably entwined, indeed that the politics was but a pale reflection of social and economic developments; but it is Trevelyan, not Marx, who has stood the test of time. Anyone wanting to know how medieval England differed from the modern version would do well to start with this introduction, which is beautifully and comprehensively illustrated. S4.
