First edition, with colour and b&w illustrations, pp314, notes to chapters, list of Alpine first ascents, map endpapers and index. The sport of mountaineering was pioneered 150 years ago by a diverse cross-section of Victorians, following in the footsteps of earlier local explorers who ventured into the upper regions of ice and snow in search of game and minerals. By the early years of the 19th century, a growing interest in the study of geological and glaciological phenomena attracted scientific interest in the origins of the Alps. It was only in the latter half of that century when, by the 1850s, interest in the largly unexplored Alpine peaks began to capture the public imagination, and a sharp increase developed in the numbers of those who tried to scale them. So intense was the level of exploration and achievement that the next decade was labelled the Alpine Golden Age. By the turn of the century the new sport had not only expanded vastly, but had begun to acquire a degree of respectability. The development of new skills and techniques resulted in greater accomplishments, whilst retaining the spirit and traditions of the pioneers. In this book the mountaineer and writer Trevor Braham illustrates aspects of the character and achievements of some of the early Victorian climbers, and their response to the unique attractions of mountaineering. These include Leslie Stephen (the father of Virginia Woolf), Alfred Wills, John Tyndall, Adolphus Warburton Moore, Edward Whymper (the first to conquer the Matterhorn), Albert Frederick Mummery and many more. Trevor Braham's comprehensive history on this period of Alpine mountaineering is essential to any mountaineer's bookshelf.POSTAGE RATES ARE BASED ON A BOOK WEIGHT UP TO 1KG. Deeside Books, 2013. 9781907813061 2013 1907813063 / 9781907813061 New Edition Soft cover New Book
New cloth-covered paperback book in mint condition. New edition published by Deeside Books, pp 12, xii, 84, map to rear, index. Ben Muich Dhui and his Neighbours is one of the earliest and scarcest of Alex Inkson McConnochie's publications and its printing in 1885 makes it a forerunner of the guide books used by today's hillwalkers. This book outlines the different routes across the Cairngorms along with the best ways of obtaining access, as well as the author providing vivid descriptions of the local scenery. The sport of hillwalking was still in its infancy in the latter part of the 19th century but was becoming ever more popular through the ease of travel brought about by the coming of the railways to the highland parts of Scotland. Further publicity to the area was also given by Queen Victoria's extensive travels on both Deeside and Speyside, which were then later published in Leaves from a Highland Journal. This book has been reproduced in its original form and also includes a copy of the original fold-out map as per the first printing. However, this small scale map does have limitations, and a summary of the modern Ordnance Survey maps that cover the various parts of the Cairngorms has also been included. A new introduction has been added which contains both a brief biography of McConnochie and also a comparison of this book with some of his later publications. Ben Muich Dhui and his Neighbours is the sixth volume in the North-east Scotland Classics Series.

Of Bens, Glens and Rambling Auld Men, Scott, Robert; Nicol, Gordon
17 Scott, Robert; Nicol, Gordon Of Bens, Glens and Rambling Auld Men
Matador 2015 1784623733 / 9781784623739 1st Edition Soft cover New Book
New, illustrated card covers. This starts with the early post WWII years when Robert and Gordon, as young men, were first attracted to the outdoors. They hiked and climbed in the mountains of the Scottish Highlands and often slept in caves, barns, bothies and tents in both summer and winter. They made friends and climbed with many of the emerging group of mainly working class rock climbers who were pioneering ascents of the cliffs and gullies in Glencoe and Ben Nevis at that time. Their week-end adventures had them ranging across the wild moors, glens and mountains in all seasons and in all weathers. As the years passed, their lives changed. One became a youth hostel warden in N.W. Scotland, later becoming a gamekeeper and ghillie on an estate in Assynt. The other went overseas as a teacher, first to Algeria then to Saudi Arabia and finally Brunei S.E. Asia, where he stayed for nearly thirty years. The two men lost touch with each other for over forty years. At that point they met again and, while re-calling their youthful ramblings and catching up on one another's later adventures, came to realise the uniqueness of their lives. From these two kinds of rambling comes this fascinating book. S23.
