If Hitler Comes: Preparing for Invasion: Scotland 1940., Barclay, Gordon.
1 Barclay, Gordon. If Hitler Comes: Preparing for Invasion: Scotland 1940.
Birlinn, 2013. 9781843410621 2013 1843410621 / 9781843410621 1st Edition Soft cover Very Good Book
Paperback in Very Good condition with slightly faded front cover. First edition, ppxviii, 318, b&w illustrations, maps and figures. With notes and index. Between May 1940 and the summer of 1941 the British people expected a German invasion that, had it succeeded, would have enslaved them into the Nazis racist war. This period saw an unparalleled effort to prepare the defence of the UK against invasion. Scotland s nationally important heavy industries, vital Royal Navy bases, and one of the UK s key ports, were very vulnerable to the sort of airborne attack that had devastated the defences of Belgium. Everyone was certain that a Fifth Column of Nazi sympathisers and agents was working actively to spread rumours and despair, and to aid the invasion forces, and in reality the country was far from united. Although the 1939 - 45 War is the most written-about war in history there is no account of the heroic efforts made in those months to prepare Scotland for the inevitable invasion, and how the defences were intended to be used. This book tells that story, against the wider history of the period and its people, and describes what was built, and what now survives. THE PACKED WEIGHT OF THIS BOOK IS OVER 1KG, ADDITIONAL POSTAGE COSTS MAY BE REQUIRED. S16.

4 David Fisher The War Magician: The Man Who Conjured Victory in the Desert
Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2004 0297846353 / 9780297846352 1st Edition Hardcover Fine Fine Book
Hardcover in Fine condition with Fine dustwrapper. First edition, pp 342, b&w illustrations. Jasper Maskelyne was a world famous magician and illusionist in the 1930s. When war broke out, he volunteered his services to the British Army and was sent to Eygpt where the desert war had just begun. He used his skills to save the vital port of Alexandria from German bombers and to 'hide' the Suez Canal from them. He invented all sorts of camouflage methods to make trucks look like tanks and vice versa. Working for military intelligence, he put on a stage show inside the Royal Palace in Cairo in order to locate an enemy spy's radio transmitter. On Malta he developed 'the world's first portable holes': fake bomb craters used to fool the Germans into thinking they had hit their targets. His war culminated in the brilliant deception plan that won the Battle of El Alamein: the creation of an entire dummy army in the middle of the desert.

Illustrated card covers in As New condition. 2005 Edition, pp 335, b&w illustrations, notes, bibliography, appendices, index. On March 21, 1918 the German Army launched a massive offensive on the Western Front in a last desperate attempt to score a decisive victory. The results were spectacular. They advanced up to 60 kilometers, further by far than the British and French had managed in their offensives on the Somme, the Aisne, and at Ypres. Then the offensive gradually lost momentum, the French counter-attacked in July, the British in August, and the Germans finally lost the initiative.

Grub Street Publishing 2003 190401030X / 9781904010302 Hardcover As New As New Book
Hardback, As New, with dust wrapper, As New. With b&w illustrations and index. This book covers the adventures of 283, 284, 293 and 294 Walrus Squadrons, operating from North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Sardinia. The pilots, like their counterparts in England, knew of the dangers of landing on the sea. It was a daunting task attempting to rescue downed airmen as they had often to operate in bad weather, and near hostile coasts. Airmen who were bobbing about in dinghies, or even just in their Mae West life jackets, were difficult to locate. Rescues from the cold sea needed to be speedy affairs, especially of those survivors not in dinghies, and the Walrus aircrew were always aware that time was of the essence. Moreover, rescues near a hostile shore often resulted in gunfire from German or Italian gunners. Missions were always treacherous. Many Walrus pilots have added personal recollections to the narrative and so too have some of those airmen who were rescued. As well as RAF and SAAF airmen, there were numerous USAAF units involved in the air war over the Mediterranean and Italy, and Norman has been in contact with several Americans whose lives were saved by these gallant men who flew the Walrus amphibian single-engined biplane. Men who knew only too well that to pick up more than two or three airmen generally meant a hard sea-borne taxi ride back to base, which conditions never guaranteed. The stories of these rescues gives one a sense of sincere pride in the men who daily risked their lives to save others from a very hostile environment.

18 Stewart Mitchell. St Valery and its Aftermath: The Gordon Highlanders Captured in France in 1940.
Pen & Sword Military 2017 1473886589 / 9781473886582 Hardcover New New Book
Hardback new, with dust wrapper, New. First edition. With b&w illustrations and maps. With appendix: Gordon Highlanders Captured or killed in France in 1940. ppxvii, 238. During the German May 1940 offensive, the 51st (Highland) Division, including the 1st and 5th Battalions Gordon Highlanders, became separated from the British Expeditionary Force. After a heroic stand at St Valery-en-Caux the Division surrendered when fog thwarted efforts to evacuate them. Within days, scores of Gordons had escaped and were on the run through Nazi-occupied France. Many reached Britain after feats of great courage and tenacity, including recapture and imprisonment often in atrocious conditions in France, Spain or North Africa. Those imprisoned in Eastern Europe were forced to work in coal and salt mines, quarries, factories and farms. Some died through unsafe conditions or the brutality of their captors. Others escaped, on occasion fighting with distinction alongside Resistance forces. Many had to endure the brutal 1945 winter march away from the advancing Allies before their eventual liberation. This superbly researched book contains many inspiring stories that deserve and merit reading.

Hardcover in blue cloth covered boards with some light shelfwearm dustwrapper with some small closed tears internally repaired and now enclosed in a clear archival wrap. First English edition, pp 318, b&w illustrations, notes, index. Chapman Pincher called "Sonya" "the most successful agent-runner of all time", but this daring, courageous woman has remained an enigma, hunted and maligned by the spy-writers of the West. In this book, she tells her own story. She describes her youth in Germany, Shanghai in the 1930s, training in Moscow, radioing at night on home-built transmitters from Japanese Manchuria and running networks in Poland and Switzerland. In the midst of war, with three children, she came to Oxford, to work within earshot of M15 and she helped Klaus Fuchs to pass the West's atomic secrets to Moscow. "Sonya's Report" is now translated for the first time with new material on the Fuchs affair and on her feeling about her life's work.
