Hers was a life of toil and hardship and many of her relatives, including her husband and son, were lost at sea. This led to a mental breakdown at the age of forty-seven and she spent the rest of her life as a patient in the Cornhill Infirmary, Aberdeen. Her life there was enlightened and humane and she began to write down recollections of her life, which are a fascinating record of an extraordinary life.
