Hang your Halo in the Hall: A History of The Savile Club from 1868.If you are interested in London's gentlemen's clubs (in the proper sense) or the Savile Club in particular, this book is a must for your reading. It gives the history of the Savile Club (so named as it was once housed in Savile Row at an early point in its history), a club for a wide variety of people for the sole purpose of socialising with fellow interesting people. This set the club slightly apart from most other clubs of the time, which usually had some common purpose behind them, usually political or sporting. The book is thorough, going through from the initial meeting where it was set up, to (almost) the present day. Its writing was handicapped by a fire in the 1970s which destroyed many of the club's records - but the author manages to overcome that. If I were to have a criticism - and it's only minor - it would be that the book, as it progresses, becomes more about the interesting club members and less about the club itself, but perhaps that is inevitable. Of more general interest is that the Savile Club is typical of all the London clubs, as the world and fashions changed about them, and they suffered a series of ups and downs. The main difference is the Savile Club is still with us and going strong in its original guise - so many other great clubs are sadly no more.
