The Ballater Cenotaph has been a focal point within the village for the last one
hundred years. It is fitting that some sort of record should mark this centenary,
and it is hoped that this book will go some way to towards doing that.
There are many well-known local family names recorded on this monument,
and much information has already been forthcoming from their relatives.
However, as will become evident from reading this volume, there are
frequently large gaps in the official records. These omissions are sometimes
due to the information being lost or destroyed, but often it can also be due to
the fact that adequate records were never kept in the first place. Throughout
the First World War it would have been difficult to accurately record
individual names when battles were numerous and casualties were high.
Under these circumstances, it is not surprising that the losses for personnel
were simply given as a numeric total for officers and other ranks under the
heading of "killed, wounded or missing", with no names being recorded.
Consequently, it has sometimes been quite difficult to identify the exact
location and time of the actions where many of the fallen met their fate.
There has been more information available for some individuals than others,
but it is hoped that this book will help to promote more research in those areas
where there are few records available. If so, then this will help to provide a
more accurate version of events for future generations.
